Biological facts about fasting
Fasting is the refraining from eating and
drinking from 8 to 12 hours. It has religious and spiritual meanings in
different cultures. However, some people practice it for health reasons, mostly,
for losing weight and delaying aging.
- Fights inflammation
Hormones
release due to fasting have effect on fighting skin acne, which is a bacterial
inflammation. Also, it increases numbers of red blood cells, white blood cells,
which fights diseases and inflammations, and platelets. Removing toxins and
lowering fats from the body are other benefits for your immune system. Free radicals,
which are waste products from various chemical reactions, including metabolism. Although
these substances can damage the cell’s DNA and case series disease, for example
cancer, many of them are essential for life. They can be found in food and
medicine. Thus, fasting can reduce the occurrence of free radicals.
- Delays aging
Muscle
loss due to aging, or sarcopenia, is associated with low metabolism. In order
to increase your metabolism, fasting is one option, helps in the degradation of
muscle tissues. Cells are dividing and growing every 24 hours; however, aging makes
the cells older and lower their performances. Autophagy, is a natural,
regulated mechanism degrades and recycles cellular components; fasting
activates this process, leading to delayed aging. Also, it increases immunity
and activates anti-aging hormones, meaning less wrinkles and more youthfulness.
Drinking plenty of water because of the dryness keeps the skin and the body moisturized,
secreting collagen and elastin.
- Boosts metabolism
Leptin,
is a hormone that regulates energy balance by inhibiting hunger. A decreased
sensitivity to this hormone results in inability to detect satiety. Whereas,
improved leptin sensitivity increases the rate of your metabolism. Fasting reprograms
liver proteins; the liver’s enzymes are prompted to break cholesterol and fats,
converting them into bile acid, which in turn is converted to heat, stimulating
faster metabolism.
- Improves hunger
Fasting
lows one’s appetite, encouraging him to follow healthy diet especially water
and fruits diet. The long hours refraining from eating, help controlling bad habits
and regulate the right sense of hunger by sending correct messages to start eating.
Additional result is helping addicted patients, such as food addicted and caffeine
addicted.
- Improves brain function
Fasting
increases the production of brain-derived neurotrophic factor, or BDNF, which
is a vital protein, active in the vital areas to memory and higher thinking. Release
of BDNF activates stem cells within the brain and converts them into neurons. Stem
cells can self-renew and differentiate into any cell types in the body, from
heart cells to brain cells to muscle cells. Increased production of BDNF protects
the brain cells from the degenerative changes that are associated with
conditions, such as Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s, while low levels of
BDNF associated with depression and several other brain problems.
Unfortunately, some cases had to consult the
doctor before starts fasting, for example, pregnancy, breast-feeding, or
gastric ulcer. Stay safe.
