Mate, a drink, and a cultural symbol
Yerba mate used to make a drink called a mate,
the botanical name of it is llex paraguariensis. Usually, its dry leaves are
soaked in hot, however cold water is another option. It also can be consumed by
putting it in capsules, diluted its bitter taste. Sweet products, energy
drinks, and blends of herbs may contain mate.
Mate benefits: it is high in antioxidants, and
it contains compounds that have several health benefits, including Xanthines, a
stimulant consists of caffeine and theobromine. Caffeoyl derivatives are also
important antioxidants that can be obtained from tea. In addition, compounds
with bitter taste known saponins, which have features that reduce inflammations
and lower cholesterol. Other compounds are polyphenols contain a variety of
antioxidants associated with reducing the risk of occurrence of many diseases. Also,
minerals, such as aluminum, chromium, copper, iron, manganese, nickel,
potassium, and zinc are inorganic compounds necessary for metabolism.
Drugs interaction:
- Major drugs interaction
Stimulants, such as Amphetamine and Ephedrine,
which stimulate the central nervous system, also called CNS, resulting in a
jittery mood and an increase of one's heart rate. Thus, caffeine in mate
increases your CNS activity when it is taken with stimulants. This interaction
might lead to serious problems, for example increased heart rate and high blood
pressure.
- Moderate drugs interaction
Cardiac stress test drugs,
for example, Adenosine and dipyridamole, which are prescribed by
a doctor to perform this test. Therefore, a delay of these drugs affect may
result because of caffeine in mate drink. It is preferred that the patient
refrains, minimally, from any caffeine sources prior to 24 hours of the test.
Antibiotics,
such as Ciprofloxacin and Norfloxacin decrease the process of
breaking and eliminating caffeine from the body; thus, consuming these
antibiotics along with mate drink can increase side effects. For example, a
jitteriness, headache, an increased heart rate, and other side effects.
- Minor drugs interaction
Contraceptive drugs, such as Levonorgestrel and
Norethisterone lower the elimination of caffeine in mate drink, thus, increases
side effects.
