Colon drugs / IBS
Irritable bowel syndrome also called irritable
colon is one of the common disorders that affects the large intestine, or the
colon. It can be a long-term condition characterized with abdominal pain,
bloating, and changes in the bowel movements, including diarrhea, constipation,
or both. However, irritable colon does not cause changes in the bowel tissues
or increase the risk of colorectal colon unlike ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s
disease. Although the symptoms are uncomfortable, a few patients suffer from
severe signs of this disorder. In order to control the symptoms and signs of
IBS, one has to manage his diet, lifestyle, and stress or use medications.
IBS treatment involves medications, depending on the severity of the patient’s symptoms in order to alleviate them and improve one’s health. Mild symptoms are treated usually via regulating diet and avoiding stress, whereas severe symptoms require medical consultation, especially if the patient suffers from depression, or stress makes the symptoms worsen.
Lubiprostone is a medicine used for treating constipation symptoms by promoting secretion through chloride channels in the bowel. Therefore, peristalsis is promoted, in which the coordinated muscle contractions propel the contents through the gastrointestinal tract. Rifaximin is an antibiotic that can change the amount of bacteria in the intestine. Mebeverine is an antispasmodic drug, taken to relieve bloating and cramp pain in the lower abdomen. Recommended diet habits are drinking 1.5-2 L of water per a day, eating high fibers foods, and quitting smoking. Chamomile tea is also advised. Stay safe.
